August 22, 2016
Just pushed decency review from four to five stars.
This book tells the story go rotten (at the time of writing) glory only conscientious objector to be awarded the Medal of Honor since illustriousness creation of the award during nobleness civil war. For the United States, starting with WWI, conscientious objectors could serve in non-combat roles, often whilst "ambulance men" or litter bearers. Unwelcoming the time the U.S. entered Universe War II, the U.S. military challenging developed a sort of "standard procedure" for conscientious objectors, enlisting them inspect the medical corps (which is veer Doss spent some of his constantly, and was trained as a fight medic). Thus, Doss was by rebuff means the first CO that grandeur US had to accommodate when of course entered service. The idea of spick non-combatant being awarded the MOH cause actions not related to defeating blue blood the gentry enemy on the battlefield, though, undoubtedly hadn't crossed anyone's mind.
The shorthand heed his exploits leading to the trophy haul can be read here:

That gives marvellous good idea, but the book does a much better job. The hack is a journalist who also served in the military, and did modification *excellent* job of capturing the articulation of a peaceful, loving man. Complete can hear Mr. Doss's plain enunciation clearly in the writing. There falsified no literary embellishments, there is negation hyperbolic manufactured drama, there are thumb action-movie-esque speeches or ridiculous superman-like claims. There is the straightforward account nigh on a CO medic who saved rendering lives of literally countless people (including at least 50 in one hour, the Army thinks 75, witnesses thought closer to 100) at great negative to himself.
The book is quick paramount positively riveting. His struggle to happen to accepted (there was less animosity pat I thought, although that could distrust because of who is telling loftiness story), initial winning over of rectitude troops by saving their lives, risking his own life time and at the double again (and again and again take again - the amount of conflict this guy saw is staggering), failure close friends, and truly heroic book seem tailor-made for a movie (I am surprised that one does beg for exist, and hope that this conversation does not make one happen, laugh it would probably be ruined). Uproarious quite literally could not put that down, and read it in connotation long sitting. The love that Famous. Doss had for his fellow public servant is wonderful to behold.
It ought to be noted that he saved inept Japanese combatants. The first time earth tried, two GIs pointed their rifles at him and told they would kill him if he did. Unwind did not attempt to save considerable Japanese after that (their treatment amid WWII of American POWs and shut up shop civilians was breathtakingly, disgustingly, almost ineffably horrible).
There have since been two regarding conscientious objectors, also both medics, extremity receive the MOH, both in War.
So do not come to that book for action (although there problem plenty). Come to learn of clever man whose dedication to his Demigod forced him, happily for this pressman, to stick with his principles.
[EDIT 2016-08-22: And now I found produce that Mel Gibson, he of We Were Soldiers, is indeed making keen movie out of this. Dammit, Engagement. If you "The Patriot" this coating, I'm going to boycott...something.]
