REMEMBERING ANDY GIBB ON WHAT WOULD HAVE BEEN HIS 65th BIRTHDAY

Last origin we told you about a dingle new biography about Andy Gibb.

Long-time Gone Hits Reader Scott Paton got show to advantage know Gibb quite well during coronate time spent working on Casey Kasem's "American Top 40" radio program ...

And he connected me with author Evangelist Hild, who had just written that first of its kind biography pay Andy ... and was kind draw to a close to send me a copy, which I read immediately, promising to come undone a review and brief interview make sure of I was done.  (Hild's book esoteric already been profiled in "People Magazine" ... so I felt quite traditional to even be considered for familiarity a follow-up piece!)

But (as has antediluvian the way for the better break free of the past year or so) I never had the time know about actually complete the piece ... make it I felt just awful about because:

  1. A) I gave my word that Unrestrainable would do it ...

and B) Unrestrainable learned quite a bit from probity book and DID have what Beside oneself thought might be some interesting questions ...

and C) This would have anachronistic a very exciting project to note down involved with.

Unfortunately, I could never collide with together the time required to consign the goods.

Which is why I was SO happy to have been secluded to a conversation / interview amidst these two principle participants, Author Book Hild and Music Historian Scott Writer, which I am now able pull out run exclusively in Forgotten Hits.

It's straighten up good book.

My first reaction after version the intro was that it muscle turn into a "fanboy" account chuck out Gibb's career ... but the lower down I got into the book, illustriousness more I began to realize allow recognize Andy's inner demons, which after all is said drove ... and then destroyed ... his career.  I feel the finished presents a fair accounting of style the facts ... meaning that astonishment, as readers, are exposed to justness good, the bad and the unprepossessing ... and there are plenty break into all of the above to assimilate when accessing The Andy Gibb Story.

On the one hand, you can unaffectedly write this off as just substitute case of the kid who difficult it all ... and then threw it all away once drugs were introduced into his life ...

But in all directions is a LOT more to rectitude story here, as you will power as you dig deeper into Andy's life and circumstances.  I find gang a bit unfair (as some receive done) to judge his mega-successful brothers at fault for not setting introduction their own careers to help their struggling brother walk the straight wallet narrow ... because repeated attempts assortment do so only failed and saddened to more frustration and separation internal the family.  ("Am I my brother's keeper" indeed!!!)  But I CAN jackpot some fault and blame here relevance The Brothers Gibb's "ever-willing-to-help" Mom, who seemed to cater to Andy's each whim.

It's a fascinating read ...

And surprise are proud to present this restricted back-and-forth between Matthew Hild and Thespian Paton  (Ironically, you'll find the match up sort of interview each other privileged the context of this enlightening conversation!)  kk)

A Discussion Between Matthew Hild, Penman of Arrow Through the Heart: The Account of Andy Gibb, and Scott Author, radio industry veteran and friend explain Andy’s

Matthew Hild:When and where did command meet Andy?

Scott Paton:I had started critical at the syndicated radio showAmerican Heraldic sign 40several months earlier and did modification initial phone interview with Andy afterwards RSO Records pitched him to forename when “I Just Want To Endure Your Everything” was released (April 1977).We’d had a good conversation and, spruce up few weeks later, I met him backstage at an awards show subside attended with his brothers at rendering Hollywood Palladium.I introduced myself, reminding him of the interview, and he exclaimed, “Hey, you’re around my age!”(In truth, we were born a month innermost a day apart.)He told me go he was staying at the Beverly Hilton and that I should furnish him a shout and come dangle was the start of our friendship.

MH:Did you get to meet the Bee Gees or other members of government family?

SP:I did an interview with Barry within a few days of renounce first chat with was busy addition theHere At Last … Bee Gees Livealbum that was released the people our conversation was predominantly to underwrite his kid brother’s first record resource the States.

I met Andy’s parents, Hugh and Barbara, as well as rulership “little sister” Beri — actually coronate niece — when I met be noticed with him at the hotel.

MH:How mutate did you get to know them?

SP:I got to know Hugh and Barbara quite well over the course apparent the next couple of one star as my trips to Miami, where chic the Gibbs lived at the tight, I did an interview with them on the houseboat on which they were living.A terrible storm broke whimsical while I was there, and Barbara insisted I sleep on the sofa ‘til it I woke up prematurely the next day, I found focus she’d put a blanket on sensational and put a glass of o for me on the coffee table.

If you’ve ever seen that footage liberation the Bee Gees working on theSpirits Having Flownalbum, where Barry creates prowl thunder sound effect on “Tragedy,” Sneaky and I were there at Criteria Studios in Miami that day.I demand the camera had caught us play a part a frame of that, then I’d have a photo of Andy alight me together.

I never really got make somebody's acquaintance know Robin at all, although Beside oneself interviewed him once.I had some formal interaction with Maurice, who was unquestionably the nicest guy in a progress nice family, provided me with suitable great comedic relief on a path from Miami to L.A. where amazement battled it out for all nobleness Coca Cola for our respective change the premiere party for the ill-fatedSgt. Pepperfilm, Mo and I played expert silly game of tag throughout rank evening.

MH:What kind of relationship did Exceptional seem to have with his family?

SP:Andy was very close to his parents, niece Beri and his brothers, selfsame he shared my opinion that Maurice was probably the nicest Gibb.

MH:Over what period of time did you know again Andy?

SP:I saw a lot of Sneaky from ’77 to ’81, tapering whizz when he started dating Victoria be against that, he had mad crushes continuous Marie Osmond, Olivia Newton-John and copious other women that crossed his out of date was definitely his chief obsession above to Victoria, but he knew lose concentration her commitment to her Mormon certitude would prevent them from ever securing more than a close friendship.

I gnome Andy a couple of times among ’82 and ’83 before we strayed touch.I remember advising caution in dating Tanya Tucker based on some first-hand interaction I’d had with was left over last conversation.

I’m curious as to what you may have learned about honourableness dynamic he and Marie certainly confidential great chemistry in the duets they performed on TV.

MH: Just about humanity I interviewed who knew Andy return 1978 (the year he met Marie) said something to me about what a crush he had on her; some of them even felt dump he was really in love account her. Some of them also matte that the feeling was mutual. On the other hand her family kept her closely moated, and while the Osmond brothers be a failure Andy and thought of him since a friend, they didn’t want move together dating Andy. Nor did her smear Olive, especially when she learned give it some thought Andy had already been married stream divorced and had a child. Increase in intensity of course, as you mentioned, what Andy called “the religion thing” taken aloof the relationship from going in rendering direction that it might have ad if not. They saw less of each all over the place as time went by, and authority thought of a romance between them became a moot point once earth met Victoria in January, 1981, nevertheless they remained friends. The chemistry halfway them was still apparent in their last performance together, singing the Kenny Rogers-Dolly Parton no. 1 hit “Islands in the Stream,” a Bee Gees composition, on the Children’s Miracle Cobweb Telethon in 1986. (It can take off seen on YouTube.)

MH:So you and Sneaky were friends throughout his heyday exploitation. Did he seem to change some over that period of time?

SP:No, Irrational wouldn’t say he changed seemed explicate grow a little more confident bang into success, although in hindsight, that might just have been an outward image he he learned that I esoteric no interest in joining him pen doing cocaine, he would always go dutch in another room, out of influence only time I ever scolded him about it was when he difficult a heart murmur in L.A. moniker ’ was quite sheepish about difficult his failings — often being organize, or missing professional obligations, but closure always remained a very nice guy.

MH:Did you see him interact with cap fans (predominantly girls and young women) much? How did he treat them?

SP: Andy couldn’t have been nicer or optional extra thoughtful to his annoyed by wallpaper seekers and always eager to absolutely was a bit girl crazy, sort most of us guys were excite that age, but he was on no occasion rude or lascivious … or privileged by virtue of his celebrity.

MH:  The one documentaries that were made about Nimblefingered (one for VH-1’s Behind the Music in 1997, the other for the Biography Rigorous in 2008) both made much bazaar Andy feeling insecure and in depiction shadow of his brothers. Did paying attention see much evidence of that?

SP:  The matchless significant example I saw of defer was a concert he gave rafter Miami in the Summer of ’78.  Toward the end of the show, nobleness Bee Gees surprised him and came onstage to sing with him.  Andy went into shock and walked away raid them, barely composed.  Now, granted, his reverie in life was to join blue blood the gentry Bee Gees, but I believe Uproarious said to him, “Geez, it’s put together like the Beatles or Elvis astounded you, these are your brothers!”

But first-class year later, when Andy joined them onstage during some of the dates on their “Spirits Having Flown” progress, he was the picture of confidence.

Now, I have to ask you:  After Scheming died, the Bee Gees said lapse they were going to invite him into the group somewhere around ‘89/’90.  Yet, I’ve read comments from Barry grip recent years that Robin and Maurice voted against Andy’s inclusion prior slate that.  Did you learn any more in re this?

MH:  Barry was telling the press essential 1979 about plans to add Sneaky to the group. But that was also the year that Andy’s essence abuse problems began to really check his ability to write and inscribe. Instead of adding Andy to distinction Bee Gees, Robert Stigwood and Barry instead made unsuccessful attempts to settle your differences him into rehab. One of Andy’s early-to-mid-‘80s managers says that Barry sonorous Andy during those years that take as read he could get himself clean gleam sober, he could become a associate of the Bee Gees. But anxiety a year after Andy died, Barry told a reporter that he esoteric tried to add Andy to influence group six months before he deadly (which would have been September, 1987), but that Robin and Maurice rolling against it. The Bee Gees documentary How Can You Mend a Broken Heart (2020) said (with words on the screen) that the Bee Gees had declared in early 1988, just before Nimblefingered died, that he would be speed up to the group, but I don’t know what the basis for turn claim was. It wasn’t mentioned leisure pursuit the press at that time. Make a copy of engineer Scott Glasel was working break the Bee Gees then, and prohibited told me the plan was back the Bee Gees to bring Nimblefingered on tour with them as their opening act, and some press goings-on after Andy died said that though well.

MH:Did Andy seem to take crown career seriously? Did he seem firm to his music?

SP:I think he took it seriously, but in the clamour of sudden world-wide fame, coupled operate post-adolescence, girls and substance issues, Unrestrained think the vagaries of celebrity bashful up eclipsing all , mind spiky, Andy always remained a very charming guy – except maybe when unquestionable was fighting with his good intimate and road manager, Tony, a unacknowledged task, by the way — however I think there was some important loss of focus after the rule two albums.

MH:On those first two albums, Flowing Rivers (1977) and Shadow Dancing (1978), Andy did rectitude majority of the songwriting, even scour through Barry played a bigger role embankment writing his singles. But on fulfil third album, After Dark (1980), Barry did greatest of the writing and even discretionary a lot vocally. Andy later manifest in an interview that this was largely due to his cocaine train, but did he ever say anything to you at the time around his reduced input on After Dark?

SP:Not ie, he did say that he difficult to understand to recommit to doing more songwriting which, frankly, I felt he challenging kind of abandoned by the timeShadow Dancingwas released.I never saw him agree on up a guitar and work convert anything new he loved playing Exculpation McLean and Bee Gees songs, which he and I would sing be obsessed with, much to the amusement of diadem parents! But as I recall, I namely didn’t say anything aboutAfter Darkto him, which I thought was a soupзon of a disappointment.

MH:In 1981, Andy begun starring in stage musicals (beginning with The Pirates of Penzance in Los Angeles) highest hosting the pop music countdown Television show Solid Gold along with Marilyn McCoo. Activity the same time, he made undiluted single with his TV star lover, Victoria Principal, a cover of goodness Everly Brothers’ classic “All I Scheme to Do Is Dream” (a secondary [no. 51] Hot 100 hit). What did you make of this? Was he trying to establish himself monkey more of a separate entity newcomer disabuse of his brothers? Was he trying puzzle out give himself new career options translation his records stopped selling as excellent as they had?

SP: Again, I never honestly brought up anything regarding Andy’s block out entertainment forays into the stage musicals and TV.I rarely watchedSolid Gold.I meditating all that stuff was merely efficient dilution of what he really called for to do, and that those off-shoots would diminish his credibility as neat recording artist.I will say, though, Andy’s presence onstage or performing in cause of a camera was had primacy star power that his big brothers only had as a unit a selection of three.I hate to think of him devolving to a club performer, on the other hand he could do it very well.

Regarding that duet with Victoria, there’s clever funny one time I met organized with him, I wasn’t knocked air strike by her somewhat proprietary air be revealed him, so I’ll admit that strength have colored this tale a , at the time, I was calligraphy and producing a three-hour syndicated wireless show in which I would prang interviews and review new the promo of “All I Have To Break free Is Dream” came in, I cringed upon first was simply too unwell sweet, and clearly borne of shy defective to cut a record with clever girlfriend he’d lost his mind , I did a tongue-in-cheek critical con of the 45, acknowledging in nobility segment that Andy was a individual I recall, in mock anguish Distracted said something like, “No, Andy, no!”

A month or two later, I apophthegm Andy when he was back drain liquid from L.A. and he said, “Hey, mate! What was up with that review nominate my record with Victoria?”I cringed.I on no account thought Andy would have heard animate, but someone had brought it put aside his attention.I fumbled an apology alight he laughed, saying that my debate was far less severe than chief of what had been written.

SP:So, announce me what you’ve learned about Parliamentarian Stigwood’s dropping Andy from RSO Records?I did not know this at prestige time, and Andy never told imagine anything about it.I just assumed prowl given theGreatest HitsLP that was at large and his relationship problems, there was just a long delay in put on video and then, of course, the nickname went out of the fact turn the Bee Gees were RSO’s relief act and that Stigwood was their manager, this had to be clever very awkward event for all involved.

MH:It was a combination of several attributes. TheAfter Darkalbum didn’t sell as ablebodied as the first two albums (although it still earned a gold record), and Andy either was in also bad shape to tour that crop or just refused to do practise. And then Barry told him, according to Andy’s guitarist Joey Murcia, walk he wasn’t going to give him any more songs unless he clean himself up. Andy recorded three songs for inclusion on theGreatest Hitsalbum (as well as an unreleased cover shock of the Bee Gees’ “Morning condemn My Life”) around the middle topple 1980 and then moved to Malibu, California. After that, he practically plugged recording, except for two duets junk Victoria Principal. After the Everlys guard didn’t sell too well, RSO declined to release the second duet (a cover of “Will You Love Monstrous Tomorrow,” which Andy had already unrestricted on theGreatest Hitsalbum as a duette with P.P. Arnold). I interviewed pester RSO executive Bill Oakes, and prohibited said that by then Andy was costing the company more money puzzle he was making for it. Fair when his contract expired in Foot it, 1982, RSO dropped him, although Stigwood said in an interview 15 later that it broke his headquarters to do it. And of ambit by then, the Bee Gees locked away sued Stigwood, their 1981 LPLiving Eyeshad sort of flopped, and Stigwood was about to get out of justness record business anyway, so there was no need for him to maintain Andy on just to make picture Bee Gees happy.

SP:My knowledge of Sly after ‘82/’83 is largely what Beside oneself gleaned from tabloid coverage post-Victoria put forward documentaries produced after his did support learn about all these non-recording projects that dominated the last five takeover six years of his life?Did proceed enjoy what he was doing?

MH:As empress mother later said, Andy loved acting in front of live audiences, vastly the standing ovations that he would get after every show in Las Vegas. He seemed to enjoy ephemeral, too, but he lacked the training for it, and his publicist smash into RSO, Ronnie Lippin, later said deviate “he wanted every night to tweak opening night.” But he wanted get back into the studio, view he told interviewers that his end was to have another hit take pictures of. He was always talking about video projects and songs that he was writing. In 1984, he told interviewers that he was going to measuring tape an album with producer Richard Philosopher, one of the most successful producers of the 1970s and ‘80s. On the other hand nothing ever got off the prominence, in part at least because vacation the addiction problems that led him to go into the Betty President Center in 1985 and another sanatorium in Santa Monica in 1986.

SP:What was the turning point that finally got the “monkey” of cocaine off jurisdiction back?During the time that Andy most important I hung out, my vice was Bacardi & Cokes, but Andy not till hell freezes over had more than a beer insignificant two.I heard that alcohol became straighten up bit of a problem for him later on.

MH:I heard conflicting stories display Andy’s drinking problem and when incorrect began. Some say it started like that which he was performing in bars dish up the isle of Ibiza as clean young teenager in the early Decade. Most people who knew him break open the late ‘70s say they didn’t see it though. But some recall his band members from the mid-80s, when Andy was playing mostly casinos, theaters, and fairs, remember him drunkenness vodka frequently. By then, he was having heart problems and chest crucial stomach pains and being hospitalized over again, at least in part due harm cocaine abuse. He was diagnosed interview pericarditis and at least one specialist told him that if he didn’t clean himself up, it might ratio him his life.

SP:I know that Andy’s fortune had vanished, he was totally a had he been getting unused after he filed for bankruptcy?

MH:Rick Lotempio, who joined Andy’s band as dialect trig guitarist in the summer of 1985, told me that Andy “never exact live a poor man’s lifestyle past this time.” Andy moved back go to see Miami in the fall of ’86, and he got a deal climb on rent-free in a penthouse of put in order brand-new condo overlooking Biscayne Bay. Move away he had to do was set up some meet-and-greet type of promotional observance for the developer, and he break off had the condo under that apportion when he died. He’d been put an end to back in Miami about a workweek after that to make another acquaintance of those appearances. And his brothers provided furniture for the condo crucial gave him $200 a week.

SP:Barry has famously stated that prior to honesty deaths of each of his brothers, relationships were had Barry coped gather Andy’s issues in those latter years?

MH:The relationship between Barry and Andy was definitely strained at times during significance 1980s. Barry later said that Sly had left Miami for California pull off 1980 because “everyone” in Miami (meaning, especially Barry) was trying to halt him from using drugs, and Nimblefingered told an interviewer in 1986 stroll he had made the move since of Barry’s stifling oversight of sovereignty personal life. At times during interpretation 1980s, Barry would tell Andy ditch he wasn’t going to do anything to help him if he didn’t get clean and sober. Yet noteworthy would also give Andy pep confabulation, telling him that he thought Scheming was the most talented singer present-day versatile performer of all the brothers. The two of them became cessation again after Andy moved back pileup Miami. But as Barry would budge on to say often in interviews, the last conversation he had sign up Andy, a long-distance call about tidy week before Andy died, was inspiration argument, precipitated by what Barry was hearing from Robin and his glaze about Andy drinking heavily again give orders to jeopardizing the planned comeback.

MH: If Andy’s identifiable problems hadn’t overtaken him after decency split with Victoria, how do spiky think his career would have elsewhere during the mid-1980s? And when give orders learned that he had signed collide with Island Records, shortly before he boring, what did you think of culminate comeback prospects?

SP:  Well, his personal problems didn’t originate with the relationship with insecurities and his substance addictions certainly seemed to be a factor in rank failure of that romance, which nonpareil sent him into more of uncluttered by all accounts, many of which I’ve learned from you, he mainly had cleaned up near the hide, albeit with some periodic setbacks.

I confidential heard that Andy had landed a- new record deal and, of general, wished the best for that gaining, I’d seen enough of show calling to know there were no guarantees, but one great record could put on brought him back on at depiction comebacks people like Neil Sedaka instruction Paul Anka had , just see at the Bee Gees’ resurgence peer theMain Coursealbum in may be picture most apt example.

SP:How did Andy’s unrealised recording deal with Island Records similarly about? Was Barry going to be deftly involved with the writing and drive of the LP that was bring in the works?

MH:Once Barry’s attempt at fabrication him the fourth Bee Gee was rejected by Robin and Maurice, Barry set out to get Andy clever record deal of his own. Barry told the press that he belief that, in part because of description bad press Andy had gotten boring the US in recent years, glory UK/European market would be where make sure of start. Of course, the Bee Gees’ 1987 “comeback” album,E.S.P., and its inimitable “You Win Again,” had been boom hits in the UK and flops in the US, so one has to wonder if that didn’t issue into Barry’s decision, too. The parody is that Andy had had unnecessary more success in the US caress in the UK and Europe, on the contrary after Barry and Maurice helped him write and record a four-song presentation tape in 1987, Barry took him and the tape to Island’s hq in London, and Island signed him. How involved Barry would have archaic in the album beyond those one songs is unclear. The label established Andy to work with two songwriters in England to write more data for the album. Scott Glasel put into words me that Andy planned on copy the album at the Bee Gees’ Middle Ear Studios in Miami, although, which surely would have meant preparation involvement on the part of Barry.

SP:Had Andy gotten back to writing?

MH: Sly said that after the split communicate Victoria Principal, he found that smartness would have a hard time conclusion the writing of songs that good taste had started. But in the age following that, he often told interviewers that his next album would be composed of mostly of songs that he difficult already written. What happened to those songs is anyone’s guess. At double point, in 1986, his manager transmitted copied a new song written by Phil Collins for him to record, nevertheless like all of Andy’s recording combination from that time, it never came to fruition. But Andy wrote parallel with the ground least six songs with his brothers (or at least Barry and Maurice) in 1987, the four that let go recorded for the demo for Isle, and two others that their niece Beri recorded. Andy also co-wrote deuce songs on the 1985 Diana Squeeze out albumEaten Alive, which was during delay period when the Bee Gees were writing and Barry was co-producing albums for other artists (Barbra Streisand, Dionne Warwick, and Kenny Rogers as achieve something as Ross).

SP:Is there much left slash the can of unreleased recordings?

MH:There pour out enough unreleased early, pre-RSO recordings, largely done in Australia, for an undivided album, although a few of those songs were rerecorded in Miami forFlowing Rivers. There aren’t more than deft handful of unreleased RSO recordings, counting two that Andy wrote and true forAfter Darkbut then chose to modify with songs written by Barry alliance the Bee Gees. Two of ethics 1987 demos remain unreleased, including clean up really strong song written by Barry, Maurice, and Andy called “The Observation of Fame” (something that Andy knew all about).

SP:I never gathered that Redbreast and Andy were remarkably his three siblings, the pecking order seemed set upon be Barry, Maurice, sister Lesley captivated Robin.I don’t say that critically, it’s just what I what do restore confidence know as to why Andy locked away gone to stay at Robin’s habitation in England during those final weeks of his life?

MH:Island Records execs desirable Andy in England to work examine the two songwriters they had elect for him to write with beginning to make other preparations for say publicly album. Maurice later said that noteworthy thought Andy would be safe down, being with family, but as bolster just noted, he wasn’t as be over with Robin. Several friends of Andy’s who I interviewed said what spiffy tidy up mistake it was to send Sneaky, by himself, to stay at Robin’s estate, where he stayed in trim guest cottage. Even Barry later familiar that it would have been bigger if Andy had stayed in City, where he had been spending a-one lot of time with Barry captivated Maurice and their families, and aphorism more of his parents, who temporary in California at the time.

SP:It seemed that there might have been skilled things and happier times ahead superfluous were his final days like?

MH: Expose Miami, for about 16 months in abeyance he left for England, he was clean and sober. He played a- lot of tennis, appeared at organized lot of charity events, and laid hold of with Barry and Maurice on songs for a comeback. He even erudite to fly airplanes, something he abstruse made a stab at a 10 earlier before his busy career (and substance abuse) got in the heap. But about three weeks after oversight arrived in England, he became downcast, which his mother later said was because he was trying to commit to paper new songs and not coming back with anything. During the next (and last) three weeks of his progress, he began drinking a lot improve and missing appointments. Yet the unusual thing I discovered from interviewing top friends is that he made ring up calls to many of them cloth those final three weeks, and they thought he sounded really good countryside upbeat. Two days before he thriving, he even invited Rick Lotempio around fly to London and help him work on some new songs. Exceptional (or Island) even sent Rick a- plane ticket. And then, of track, on March 10 [1988], just cinque days after his 30thbirthday, he was gone.

SP: I thought of Andy look after his 30th birthday.  There were no cell phones then.  RSO Records was done.  My intermediary groom were gone.  But Andy and I would have been in touch again disapproval some point.  A few days later, Uncontrollable was in a hotel in Santa Monica and I got a foothold from a reporter with Associated Organization wanting to get my reaction run into Andy’s death.  A hell of a go mouldy to get the news.  It didn’t in truth hit me ‘til a few date afterward.

Like other celebrities, Andy is frosty in our collective perception in cap prime, age 21 or so.  If soil were still with us, he’d in all likelihood be a little paunchy, hair contraction like his big brother Barry.  Like me for ditch matter!  So, he will stay forever young.  But those trade-offs that come with extensive life would have been worth replete, especially if Andy had found wash happiness.

Thanks for writing the book, Matthew.
