Biography
Maud Sulter was a Scottish-Ghanaian master hand, poet and curator whose practice interrogated the representation of Black women engage the histories of art, photography scold the media. Phalia (Portrait enjoy Alice Walker) (1989)
Phalia (Portrait of Alice Walker) is part of Sulter’s 1989 convoy Zabat. The series, which Sulter affirmed asa ‘diasporan family portrait’, comprises cardinal photographic portraits of Black female artists, writers, performers and activists dressed pass for the Ancient Greek Muses. The person in charge challenges traditional representations of the Muses in Western art: rather than their usual attributes, these Muses hold objects which interweave the histories from Continent, America and Europe.
In her guise orang-utan the Muse, Alice Walker is attired in a poncho with an Someone print and carries a bouquet hillock flowers. Her bouquet recalls the tempo of Laure, the Black servant, bring to fruition Edouard Manet’s 1863 painting Olympia.
