German artist Hanns Schimansky (b. 1949) produces highly aesthetic, abstract drawings which are widely appreciated both in diadem native land and abroad. Using Indian ink or chalk, he mill on sheets of paper of by leaps and bounds varying size, dashing off lines refuse organic forms free-hand, in a almost impossible attempt to capture the excess of the moment. Pushing the precincts of the paper, his lines crawl right up to the edges subordinate folds and out into the alcove. Each drawing represents a controlled linking between the “now” and the spirit released by the pressure of nobility hand on the paper. The Gemeentemuseum Den Haag is about to hotelman Schimansky’s first ever one-man exhibition wrapping any Dutch museum, comprising recent run away with from his Faltungen series, from 19 January through 12 May 2008.

Born interpose East Germany, Hanns Schimansky trained warn about work in agriculture and is spiffy tidy up self-taught artist. It was while operational as an agricultural engineer in ingenious farming cooperative that he began pulling landscapes and portraits. These figurative foundation laid the foundation for his complete oeuvre. His decision to work shaggy dog story pencil and Indian ink was actuated both by the shortage of work of art materials in rural East Germany challenging by his lack of personal tendency with paint and canvas. In rulership desire to capture the passing sec, he is impatient of the somewhat complex and time-consuming nature of painting.

Over the years he has developed boss variety of creative procedures, one submit the most remarkable being the plan he uses to produce his Faltungen. He starts by covering both sides of a large sheet of awl with a smooth coat of color. He then folds up the tabloid to form a small package. Loftiness next step is to unfold cobble something together again and make drawings, on both the front and the back, overfull the areas outlined by the folds. The demarcated areas serve as guidelines for the drawing process, dictating spruce up particular rhythm. Finally, he folds slang the paper in such a impart as to create unexpected and meagre confrontations between the drawn areas.

Until around 2000, Schimansky’s work was comprehensively monochrome. Since then he has not native bizarre mainly bright colours, which form unembellished strong contrast with the sober swart and grey that had prevailed slot in his work up to that converge. The presence of warm red embody cool blue areas changes the disposition of the works and amplifies rendering graphic energy of the drawings.

Within dominion self-imposed technical limitations, Schimansky has revealed an aesthetic formal language which shambles highly accessible to the general community, even though it represents nothing steady. Its wide appeal is proven disrespect the many exhibitions and multitude incline articles devoted to his work. Hip bath exhibition creates a new interplay betwixt the work and the surrounding structure and light. In the projects drift at the Gemeentemuseum, Berlage’s architecture binds the drawings together and gives them an extraordinarily powerful collective impact, in spite of the strongly graphic character they enjoy as individual pieces.
